Handwritten Recipe Gifts with a Cricut! (2024)

Make sentimental gifts that will bring someone joy for birthdays, weddings, Christmas, etc. A Cricut handwritten recipe gift will be cherished for years to come!

I watched my mother run her fingers over the familiar handwriting, tears welling up in her eyes. I’d found one of Grandma’s old recipes and transferred it as a present for my mother, and she was visibly overcome with emotion.

Giving sentimental gifts will mean more than any store-bought give ever will. Those gifts will not get tossed out when the next great thing comes out. They will be cherished for a lifetime.

My Grandmother made a huge impact on my life and the lives of everyone in our family. We learned so much about unconditional love, helping others, and baking from her!

So, when I happened upon her handwritten recipe card of one of my favorite desserts, I knew I had to do something special with it.

As it happens, I was walking through the Dollar Tree the next day and I spotted these nice looking oven mitts. Light bulb moment!!

I love using Dollar Tree items with my Cricut machine! They have some great items just waiting to be personalized.

I came home and got busy. This is what I came up with, and it turned out better than I had imagined.

I was able to upload her handwriting into Cricut Design Space and cut out iron-on vinyl with it. You could also transfer the handwritten recipe to a plate using the same method and adhesive vinyl.

Directions For Sentimental Gifts: How to Upload Handwriting to Cricut

I found an app that has changed my life!! Well, maybe not quite that dramatic, but it definitely has changed my crafting life!

Enter Adobe Capture CC … have you heard of it?? I read about it somewhere, so of course, had to try it and worked wonders.

Since this part would be very hard to describe, I made a video of how to use the app to upload the recipe to Cricut Design Space. Make sure to turn on the volume on and watch it at the top or side of the post.

If you do better with written directions, there will be a printable card at the bottom of the post!

So, once the handwritten recipe file is cleaned up, upload it to Cricut Design Space. It uploads perfectly! No need to do anymore cleaning up!

(Update: CDS has released a new remove background feature that might be able to clean up the text if you have Cricut Access. I don’t have access to it, so I don’t know for sure!)

Save it and add it to your canvas. Size it to fit the oven mitt. Hit “Make it”. Make sure to check the mirror setting on the preview screen.

Place some HTV shiny side down on a cutting mat. Set the cut to iron-on vinyl and go. (Watch my cutting and weeding HTV video tutorial here if you need additional help.)

Pro Tip: For small font like this, I always make sure my blade is sharp. Poking it into a ball of aluminum foil does the trick!

Now, I’m not going to lie… weeding this was not easy. Old script font has a lot of little pieces.

Crank up Alexa, roll up your leaves, take a shot… well, that might or might not help! But anyway, devote some time to it.

I find it easiest to pull the excess HTV off at an almost 180-degree angle.

You made it through the hardest step! Take a breath…

Applying HTV to Oven Mitt

Then apply the HTV to the oven mitt with a heat press, EasyPress or iron. If you need additional help with a heat press, read all about using a heat press here.
