Phony pastor finds trusting victim at Sheetz: Mayfield Heights blotter (2024)

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio

Theft by deception: Mayfield Road

A man said April 6 that he gave an unknown man a ride to CVS in Lyndhurst after the man approached him in the Sheetz parking lot.

The unknown man told him that he was a pastor and needed to get his car fixed and would be speaking to a friend at CVS that would lend him the money for repairs.

The “pastor” went into CVS and returned, stating that the friend was not there, then asked the man if he would lend him the money.

The man gave the suspect $240 and dropped him off at a bus stop.

He later called the number he was given and the person who answered said they knew nobody by the name that was given by the alleged pastor.

Reports indicate that a previous incident had been reported at Sheetz in which a man posing as a pastor asked someone for a ride and for money for his sick daughter.

Fraud: Marsol Road

A woman reported April 5 that she was the victim of a scam after searching online for a phone number for eHarmony so she could cancel her account.

When she called, she gave shared screen access to the unknown person and together they accessed her bank account.

During the call, she said the man made several transactions to retailers such as Target and Zelle to verify her bank account.

Her bank said nearly $1,000 in fraudulent transactions had been made.

Officers called the same phone number and introduced themselves. The caller, who had a foreign accent, cussed them out and hung up on them.

Upon callback, the number had been disconnected.

Violation of protection order: Mayfield Road

A resident said April 6 that her ex-boyfriend had violated a protection order by posting a video on social media showing her masturbating.

She had sent him the video while they were dating in 2021. She was able to show officers the same video, which was still saved on her phone.

Officers said the post did not appear to violate the protection order because it was not an attempt to initiate conversation with her, but said the matter would be reviewed by the prosecutor.

Theft: Mayfield Road

Dunkin Donuts employees reported April 4 that a man in the drive-thru scammed them out of $20 by confusing the cashier, then claiming to be refunded incorrectly.

They believed the suspect had done the same thing in the past.

The incident is being investigated.

Disturbance: SOM Center Road

The staff at Wendy’s reported April 7 that a man at the counter was insisting that they take payment in gold and indicated that he had access to a gun.

Officers located the man, 52, and confirmed that he did not have a weapon.

They gave him a courtesy ride to his home at the Gates Mills apartments and learned that his mother had recently died. He was emotional and a bit intoxicated.

He was advised not to return to Wendy’s for the rest of the day.

Having a weapon under disability: Mayfield Road

Upon checking vehicles parked in a fire lane at the Gates Mills Place apartments April 9, officers discovered that one was registered to a man with a felony warrant for burglary out of Warrensville Heights.

They waited in the area and arrested the Cleveland man, 36, when he returned to the vehicle.

He was in possession of a gun that was found to have been stolen out of Berea in 2020.

The man was charged with having weapons under disability and receiving stolen property.

Disturbance: Mayfield Road

A South Carolina woman, 40, was arrested for failure to disclose personal information April 9 after officers responded to the Gates Mills Place apartments because she would not leave the home of her estranged husband.

She had been in town and was invited into the apartment to visit her children, but would not leave when asked.

Officers initially had only asked for identification because she kept lingering in the hallway after multiple requests to leave the building.

Fraud: SOM Center Road

A woman said April 7 that since last July, somebody has been using her CVS rewards without her permission.

She said she pays $5 a month and receives $10 in rewards, which have been used in at least 19 transactions at several CVS locations.

She listed multiple people that she suspected of the fraud, including her incarcerated ex-boyfriend, his current girlfriend and a random employee of CVS.

Disturbance: Golden Gate Boulevard

Officers responded to the Costco gas pumps April 4 on a report of a man spitting at an employee and other customers.

The staff said he was rushing the person in front of him and making him hurry to pump fuel.

The suspect was pumping his fuel when officers arrived and left without further incident.

The staff was satisfied with the outcome.
