She was a BRYAN, Ohio (AP) A computer consultant has pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated murder for killing his elderly parents in a rural northwest Ohio cemetery. William Ansley, 57, of Framingham, pleaded guilty Thursday at a pretrial hearing in William County Common Pleas Court. Judge Robert Wilson ordered Ansley held without bond at the county jail. Wilson also ordered a pre-sentence investigation.
No sentencing date has been scheduled. He could receive a maximum sentence of life in prison. Ansley was charged with killing his father, Orlo Ansely, 83, of Montpelier, and mother, Genevieve Ansley, 79, on June 19. He told police that he killed his parents out of mercy because they were in ill health. Ansley was arrested several hours after the slayings by Wayne County, authorities on a plane at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
The plane was bound for Boston. He had been visiting his parents for several days before the shootings. They each had been shot once in the chest. Shell casings from a caliber pistol were found near the bodies at Floral Grove Cemetery in West Unity, about 50 miles west of Toledo. Ansley's father bought the gun the day before the couple was shot, police said.
The couple were genealogists. Police initially suspected the couple were robbed because Orlo Ansley's wallet, his wife's purse and their car were missing. He also wrote a volume of essays, "On the Decay of A final book, "As I Sauntered Out, on Mid-Century Morning," is awaiting publication. The findings, reported Thursday by the national Centers for Disease Control, were based on 1984 police reports, the latest available at the time the survey was begun.
Police reported 27 fatal family or intimate assaults for the year, and 3,295 non-fatal ones, said Linda Saltzman, a behavioral scientist with the CDC. Incident reports were taken from a broad range of police categories, including assault, robbery, rape and disorderly conduct. Overall, 14 percent of reports in those categories were in families or intimate relationships, and about 25 percent of the assaults were in such situations, Saltzman said. Analysis of 177 assaults found that 52 percent of the fatality victims and 73 percent of the nonfatality victims were women; 74 percent of the fatal assaults and 80 percent of the non-fatal ones were committed by men. Twenty percent or more of the Atlanta incidents studied involved broken relationships, and between 26 percent and 37 percent of the parties involved had been reported to the police in similar assaults before, the CDC said.
"Violence between persons who are related, share a household or are otherwise intimate with each other is a widespread public health problem," the CDC concluded.
