To test the device, you can turn it on and connect to it, however be cautious that you do not use the internet (i.e. do not open your browser and temporarily disable apps that use internet in the background e.g. Dropbox and iCloud).
You may lose connectivity briefly when moving across a national border (as you connect to a new network), but other than that your connectivity will be seamless.
